NAB League girls start their season with a stirring come from behind win

The GWV Rebels have edged out the Sandringham Dragons by five points in a nail biting round one match up.

On a perfect day for footy, the round one nerves obviously got the better of both sides as they fumbled the ball which led to a lot of contested footy.

As the first quarter drew to a close both sides cleaned up their ball movement and a clean play led to Lilli Condon crumb and goal to give the Rebels a three point lead heading into quarter time.

The second quarter belonged to the Dragons as they kicked two goals to the Rebels zero. The girls moved the ball well but turned it over at crucial points that allowed the Dragons to score on the counter attack.

At half-time coach, Rhys Cahir asked the girls to tighten up around the contest and make their tackles stick in order to get back into the contest.

The girls started the third quarter on fire as Tahlia Meier soccered the ball through on the goal line. The Dragons managed to wrestle back the momentum but couldn’t put the score on the board.

The Rebels went into the three quarter time break five points down primed for a big last quarter.

The contest intensified in the last quarter as both teams knew what was on the line. An opportunistic snap on goal from Renee Saulitis put the Rebels in front by one point with only ten minutes to go.

A rushed behind a couple of minutes later had the scores all tied up. With only two and half minutes on the clock Renee Saulitis stood up again to kick the game winning goal from a tight angle.

The coaches judged Crystal Summers best afield with her outstanding work across half-back. She finished with 13 disposals, four marks and a game high six rebound 50’s.

Other good players included Renee Saulitis who kicked the two most important goals of the game, Maggie Caris was dominant in the ruck finishing with 24 hit outs, Lilli Condon and Paige Scott ran riot through the midfield and up forward and Isabella Hill, in her first game, was the leading possession winner and tackler with 19 and five respectively.
