Picture
Former Rebel Willem Drew has been selected to play his first game of AFL for the Port Adelaide in Round 1 against the Melbourne Football Club, Saturday, March 23 at 1:45pm.

Coming to Port Adelaide as a promising midfielder via the 2016 National Draft (Pick #33), Willem Drew is one of the Power's emerging crop of young guns. Originally from Greater Western Victoria Rebels, he has shown signs of his ability to play on the inside or outside as well as pushing forward to kick goals. A big-bodied midfielder renowned for his decision making under pressure.

"Drew is picked because he can play really good football already and we think he can certainly have an impact straight away.
"Whether that be in pressure, whether that be in ball use, whether that be in team care, I'm sure he can have an impact.
"And what a great place to play your first game, the MCG. It's pretty exciting." - Ken Hinkley.

Drew played for Koroit FNC during his junior career.

The Greater Western Victoria Rebels are pleased to announce our 42 man playing squad for the 2019 NAB LEAGUE season.
The GWV Rebels administration and coaching staff has been very pleased with the quality of the work produced by the regions most talented and promising footballers over the past five months during the Rebels 2019 NAB LEAGUE squad pre-season.
Initially over 140 players across the Goldfields, Wimmera, South West and Hampden Talent Regions took up the invitation to be a part of the preseason and all players worked extremely hard 2-3 nights per week to improve their skills and fitness levels.
All players have been under the watchful eye of 2nd year Rebels Head Coach/Regional Coaching Director Marc Greig and the experienced Coaching and Development staff across the Rebels Talent Region of Western Victoria, and the new Rebels coach has been impressed with the talent throughout the region.
“It’s been great to see just how many talented footballers we have in the western region ofVictoria”, Greig mentioned.
“It’s been an extremely hard task trimming our list to just 42 players, such has been the spreadof talent throughout the region”.
“That being said, we are extremely happy with our initial selected NAB LEAGUE U18 Boyssquad, with a good mix of experience and youth within”.
The squad contains 23 players new to NAB LEAGUE football in 2019, with a mix of 22 top-age (turning 18 in 2019) and 17 bottom-age (turning 17 in 2019) players and 3 returning players as 19yr olds.
“We’re excited to introduce such many new players into the GWV Rebels program for the first time, and we look forward into developing the squad into not just better footballers, but more importantly better people”, Greig mentioned.
Like any squad, players that are excelling outside this squad in local league football have the opportunity to be included throughout the season, as well as the players that have alreadybeen selected that don’t meet expectations may be released back to local football.
The Greater Western Victoria Rebels start their NAB LEAGUE season against the Dandenong Stingrays at Mars Stadium, Ballarat, on Saturday 23rd March as part of a Triple Header including the Rebels NAB LEAGUE Girls and Under 16 Boys Development Team.
The 2019 GWV Rebels NAB LEAGUE Playing Squad is attached to this press release.

NAB LEAGUE LAUNCHES A NEW ERA

3/1/2019

A new era in under 18 football will begin in 2019 with the introduction of the NAB League.
NAB, a long-time partner of the NAB AFL Rising Star Program in Australia, will further support the
future stars of the game, extending its partnership with the AFL to the next exciting phase of the
expanded under 18 competition, that now includes teams from Victoria, Tasmania, Northern
Territory, NSW/ACT and Queensland.
With a focus to provide further support in education, wellbeing, high performance and coaching, the
NAB League will help increase opportunities for talented footballers to reach their potential both on
and off the field.
It will also help better prepare the athletes that don’t get drafted, returning to local clubs and schools
as peer leaders who set examples.
In a significant development for the national sport, the Tasmanian Devils will be a fully-fledged NAB
League team in 2019, while an Academy Series featuring five northern state squads will take part in
the lead up to the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
AFL Head of Talent Pathways & State League Competitions, Tristan Salter, welcomed NAB’s
involvement with the next chapter of growth in the under 18 pathway.
“NAB has been a fantastic supporter of our AFL talent pathways for 18 years now and it is exciting
that they will extend their support and be naming rights partner for this new era,” Mr Salter said.
“Over 1,000 AFL and AFLW players, including the likes of Dustin Martin, Chloe Molloy, Gary Ablett
Jnr and Madison Prespakis, have been drafted from Victoria’s under 18 competitions – with 2018
producing more than 50 percent of the boys (62%) and girls (59%) talent at the NAB AFL and
AFLW Drafts.
“We welcome Tasmania to the competition in what will be the start of the team’s journey towards a
return to the VFL competition.”
In a step forward for footy fans, a revamped digital platform, highlighted by the official NAB League
app, will offer insights never before seen from the competition.
“The dedicated NAB League app will provide our audience with live information at their fingertips,
from stats to game vision and match highlights,” Mr Salter said.
“The increased digital access to the competition and its players will help our audience learn more
about our draft prospects across the entire season, not just around draft time.”
NAB’s Head of Media and Partnerships, Thomas Dobson said, “We’re thrilled to extend our
longstanding AFL partnership with the introduction of the NAB League. As a proud partner of NAB
AFL Auskick and the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program, the NAB League sees us further support the
development pathways for young footballers and to help grow the game. We look forward to seeing
the competition kick off in March.”
NAB will be joined by four further partners to bring in the new era of the NAB League, with Telstra,
PUMA, Open Universities Australia (OUA) and The Bar Counter aiming to elevate the league to be
the number one under age sporting competition in the country.
The NAB League girls’ competition begins on March 2 with the boys to start March 23. The NAB
League app will launch mid-March.
For more information on the NAB League and the GWV Rebels please contact Phil
Partington on 0418 558850.

Featuring players from all across western Victoria, the 35-strong squad features eighteen players from last year’s GWV Rebels U18 Girls squad, including 8 Futures players from the 2018 season and 9 players new to the Rebels in 2019.

The U18 Girls competition initially launched in 2017 as a five-game season and has expanded to nine games in 2018 & 2019 with 3 futures curtain raisers as highlights in the first 6 rounds.

“We’ve selected a squad with a great balance of experience and talent”, said GWV Rebels Female Talent Coordinator Krista Woodroffe.

“Our girls have been training since mid-November under the guidance of our coaching panel and fitness staff, and we’re confident that we’ll field a competitive side in each of our nine U18 Girls games”.

The squad will be led by a six-person leadership group which will later be announced.

“All six of our leaders have been selected by a player vote, which is due to be announced Wednesday night at training.

The squad has come together under match play conditions in recent weeks as training numbers were trimmed to the final 35 players selected, with impressive on-field results.

“We’ve had some solid hit outs, with two intra-club trial games and a competitive game against the Geelong Falcons Futures and U18 squads over the weekend, so the girls are definitely looking forward to Round 1 this weekend”.

The GWV Rebels start their season this Saturday at RAMS Arena, against the Bendigo Pioneers starting at 11am.

Minds need training too

The Great Western Victorian Rebels have joined with Headspace Ballarat & 103.1 Power FM to highlight the work of Headspace and the need for teenagers and young adults to understand the importance of good mental maintenance.

On Saturday August 18, the GWV Rebels will take to Mars Stadium wearing Headspace green socks, with all players encouraged during a special training session to write the names of family or friends that have been affected by mental health issues on the socks as a tribute.

Headspace Ballarat Youth Engagement Officer, Andy Penny said the main theme that would be discussed with the GWV Rebels players during the special training session this week would be mental health maintenance, things like reaching out to a mate, getting a good sleep, eating regular meals and more.

“It’s great to be working with the Greater Western Victoria Rebels who are great ambassadors and can influence their peers in their communities.  Evidence suggests three in four adult mental health conditions emerge by age 24 and half by age 14 so it’s important to be preparing young people now” said Penny

GWV Rebels Talent Manager, Phil Partington said it was an important message for the players and all young people.

“Being talented athletes doesn’t make our players immune to mental health issues.  These are important conversations for our players and we will encourage them to carry the message to their family, friends and others.

With suicide being the biggest killer of young Australians and accounting for the deaths of more young people than car accidents, we need to make sure our young people know to look out for each other and make mental health maintenance a priority” said Partington.

103.1 Power FM General Manager, John Fitzgibbon praised the initiative “The work of headspace is critical, and we are pleased to join with the GWV Rebels in promoting that importance.  Educating our young people about good mental health maintenance is a must, particularly young men as male suicide rates are 3 times higher than women, consistently over the last 10 years.”

For more information please contact Phil Partington on 0418 558850 or Andrew Penny from Headspace on 5304 4777
