Three current Greater Western Victoria Rebels players will experience senior Victorian Football League (VFL) football this weekend.
With the Rebels not playing this weekend due to the final TAC Cup Development Round for 2017, current Rebels Lloyd Meek, Callan Wellings and Flynn Appleby will all play for the North Ballarat Roosters as they take on Collingwood at Victoria Park on Sunday 13th August.
Whilst Meek and Wellings, both of whom are playing as 19 year olds in the TAC Cup competition this season, have already played three games each with the Roosters this year, Sunday will mark Appleby’s first game at VFL level after an impressive season in defence for the GWV Rebels where he has been named amongst the Rebels best players regularly this season, keeping some of the best forwards in the TAC Cup quiet.
GWV Rebels Talent Manager Phil Partington was thrilled to see these three players given an opportunity with the Roosters, highlighting the continued support from Roosters Head Coach Marc Greig and his Match Committee.
“It’s great to see Lloyd, Callan and Flynn get an opportunity at VFL level this week against Collingwood, giving them the chance to play against AFL-listed players at a traditional VFL venue”.
“The relationship between the GWV Rebels and the Roosters coaching group and their players continues to remain strong as ever, with seventeen players from this week’s Roosters team coming through the Rebels program, and giving current Rebels players a chance to experience this will do wonders for their development”.
Meek will take part in the National AFL Draft Combine in October, with Wellings this week invited to the State AFL Draft Combine also being held in October. Ironically, all three players live together as well Ballarat to further their football aspirations.
The Greater Western Victoria Rebels will next see action as part of the TAC Cup’s “Country Round” triple header at Mars Stadium on Sunday August 20th, taking on the Dandenong Stingrays at 3:30pm in front of a host of former Rebels gathered for a Rebels Reunion Day, celebrating the Rebels’ 1997 Premiership team as well as all former Rebels players and officials.
