In a strong team performance, the Rebels defeated Queensland by 46 points at Eureka Stadium earlier today.
The Rebels withstood a brief charge from Queensland in the third quarter to storm home with an impressive six-goal final term, winning 13.15 (93) to 6.11 (47).
After being dealt a lesson at the hands of the Geelong Falcons two weeks ago, it was just the tonic the Rebels needed.
Defenders Ben Simpson and Angus Cleary, the latter of whom was given the crucial task of subduing Queensland star Eric Hipwood, were both excellent down back for the Rebels.
Up the other end of the ground, Daniel Rioli was superb across half-forward, kicking three goals and applying terrific defensive pressure on the opposition.
Coach David Loader said a host of players contributed to the victory.
“It was probably the most even (team) performance we’ve had all year,” Loader said.
“We were really good, especially in the first half … our intensity came back and our structure around the ball was a lot better.
“After what was probably a testing week against Geelong a couple of weeks ago, it was really nice for the boys to bounce back.”
Despite blustery conditions, the Rebels enjoyed a strong opening half to lead by 36 points at the main break.
However, the home side suffered a bit of a scare midway through the third term, when Queensland quickly drew to within nine points and threatened to pull ahead.
The Rebels responded well, but Loader admitted he was disappointed by his side’s brief lapse.
“There’s still plenty of learning to come out of the game – there’s no doubt about it,” Loader said.
“We had a pretty poor patch for about 15 or 20 minutes in the third quarter, where we went away from probably what we’d been doing well earlier in the game.
“We regrouped at three quarter time and finished the game relatively strongly.”
The Rebels, who sit two wins clear on top of the ladder, will host the fourth-placed Eastern Ranges at Eureka Stadium on August 1.
