The winning streak continues for the North Ballarat Rebels, who claimed their 10th consecutive victory yesterday afternoon after defeating the Western Jets by 29 points at Eureka Stadium.
The ladder-leading Rebels were too good for the Jets in a scrappy, congested affair, winning 10.15 (75) to 6.10 (46).
Despite the end result, it was a relatively even start to the contest.
The home side controlled much of the play early on but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard, kicking 1.6 to enter the first change with scores level.
While the Rebels’ woes in front of goal continued, their intensity and method gradually ramped up to produce a 13-point lead at half time.
However, it was the third term when North Ballarat really clicked into gear.
Led by superb individual efforts from Joseph Symons and Jake Edwards, the Rebels kicked a flurry of goals early in the quarter to earn some breathing room and increase their lead to 41 points.
The Jets admirably pushed until the final siren to reduce the end margin, but the Rebels once again showed their ability to snare wins even when not producing their finest work.
Coach David Loader said his team did enough to get the desired result.
“It was an interesting game,” Loader said.
“Even though it didn’t rain, I thought it was pretty trying conditions. The wind was pretty gusty and it was really cold.
“I thought we played some reasonable footy just after half time. Our third quarter was pretty good. I don’t think either team played at their best, but to get the points again was a good result.”
Josh Webster continued his excellent season for the Rebels with another strong performance, this time in a new role up forward, while tall Nicholas Hausler provided a target with three goals.
However, the win was soured by a hip flexor injury to promising midfielder Jacob Wheelahan, who was on crutches after the game.
North Ballarat returns to Eureka Stadium on Sunday to host regional rivals Geelong Falcons, who caused the Rebels’ only loss of the season back in Round One.
