The Greater Western Victoria Rebels have announced their playing squad for the 2018 TAC Cup Girls season.
Featuring players from all across western Victoria, the 35-strong squad features twenty players from last year’s inaugural GWV Rebels TAC Cup Girls squad, including 2017 co-best & fairest winners Sophie van de Heuvel (Ballarat Swans) and Ella Bibby (Lake Wendouree), and fifteen players new to the Rebels in 2018.
The TAC Cup Girls competition launched in 2017 as a five-game season, and will expand to nine games in 2018.
“We’ve selected a squad with a great balance of experience and talent”, said GWV Rebels Female Talent Coordinator Krista Woodroffe.
“Our girls have been training since mid-November under the guidance of our coaching panel and fitness staff, and we’re confident that we’ll field a competitive side in each of our nine TAC Cup Girls games”.
The squad will be led by a five-person leadership group with Lauren Butler (Carisbrook) selected as captain, with Georgia Clarke (Ararat Storm), Rene Caris (Horsham Saints), Ella Bibby (Lake Wendouree) and Tara Jasper (Horsham Saints) joining Butler in the leadership group.
“We’re pleased to not just name Lauren as captain, but our whole leadership group”, Woodroffe commented.
“All five of our leaders were selected by a player vote, and they were fitting selections as all five lead by example both on and off the field”.
“Lauren has been a part of the Rebels program for four years now, and after finishing in third place in our Best & Fairest last year and playing in a senior Women’s premiership with Carisbrook, we think the captaincy can help her take the next step with her playing career”.
The squad has come together under match play conditions in recent weeks as training numbers were trimmed to the final 35 players selected, with impressive on-field results.
“We’ve had some solid hit outs, with two intra-club trial games and a competitive six-quarter game Bendigo Pioneers last weekend, so the girls are definitely looking forward to Round 1 this weekend”.
The GWV Rebels Girls start their season this Saturday at Holm Park, Beaconsfield against the Eastern Ranges starting at 12:45pm.
