GWV Rebels announce NAB League Girls round one team selection

2/27/2020

The GWV NAB League Girls will this Saturday take on the Sandringham Dragons at City Oval, Ballarat from 11:30am.

After a series of practice matches against themselves and the Geelong Falcons, Head Coach Rhys Cahir believes the girls are ready for the fast and contested nature of the home and away season.

“The girls are biting at the bit to get out on the ground and show how hard they have worked this pre-season. The coaching staff and I are really pleased with the overall standard of our playing squad and are happy with the 22 players we have selected for round 1,” he said.

The first game of the season also naturally means the opportunity arises for several first gamers. There will be seven debutants in round one, congratulations to Olivia Leonard (Ballarat Swans), Katelyn Hazlett (Bendigo Thunder), Stella Bridgewater (South Warrnambool), Isabella Hill (North Ballarat), Paige Scott (Carisbrook), Zoe Cowan (North Ballarat), and Tahlia Meier (Lake Wendouree).
We encourage all Rebels fans to come down to City Oval and cheer our NAB League girls on this weekend.

The GWV Rebels are excited to announce the final squad and leadership group for the upcoming NAB League Girls season.

This year’s group will be led by Chloe Leonard along with vice-captains Magee Caris and Renee Saulitis. Lilli Condon, Isabella Hill and Ally Trigg round out the leadership group.

Head coach Rhys Cahir was rapt with the calibre of leaders who were voted in by the girls at their camp on the weekend.

“This year's leaders are an exceptional bunch, captain Chloe Leonard is an outstanding leader who wants the group to get better over herself. Vice-Captains Renee Saulitis and Maggie Caris are outstanding footballers who are in the AFL academy and lead accordingly on the field. Isabella Hill is a 19-year-old who has come in and won the respect of the group over a short period of time. Lilli Condon is a barrel of laughs who gets along well with the whole group, and Ally Trigg is an exceptional runner out on the wing and is highly respected by the girls,” he said.

This year’s squad features 15 returning players and 24 first time Rebels. There are also two 19 year-olds, 12 top age players, 17 middle age players and eight bottom age players. Cahir is pleased with the makeup of the group and is looking forward to the season ahead.

“We have a good mix of top age, middle age and bottom age girls who seem to get better and better every season and keep producing. It is getting very exciting again that the next group can step in and replace the top age girls but they are already at the standard before they begin with us,” he said.

Rebels girls co-ordinator Krista Woodroofe is also pleased with the makeup of the squad heading into 2020.

“The leadership group is made up of mostly made up of returning players, who have been part of Rebels squads for the past two seasons. There are also a couple of 19 year-olds who come into the squad as well as a few bottom age girls who have come through our V-Line Cup who are looking exciting for this season,” she said.

Woodrofe is pleased with the girls individual development and cohesiveness as a playing group at this point of the season, and is excited for the year ahead.

“We definitely feel we have picked our best squad given that normally we would only have the squad at 35 but there were four or five girls we couldn’t distinguish from each other so we opened up to 39 players just to allow more girls to get the opportunity to be part of the squad. We’re really pleased with our top end talent as well, we think they will provide good leadership over the course of the season.”

Ten NAB League Girls players have been named in the 2019
NAB AFL Women’s Under-18 All Australian Team.

Unbeaten AFLW Under-18 Championship team Vic Metro
contributed four members to the side while six players came
from Vic Country’s ranks, including GWV Rebels NAB league
Captain, Sophie Molan

Sophie had an outstanding NAB AFLW National Under-18
Championship as a Medium midfielder with a strong overhead
mark who can recover and win it at ground level. A very good
finisher who averaged 16 disposals, 10 contested, 2.8
clearances and 5.2 tackles a game throughout
Championships.

AFL Head of Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said it is
exciting times for the AFLW, with expansion meaning another
120 places are available for talented female players from
across Australia at the elite level.

“The 2019 NAB AFLW Under-18 Championships saw the
country’s best young female talent displaying their skills for
club recruiters, including representatives from the four
expansion teams – West Coast Eagles, Gold Coast Suns,
Richmond and St Kilda,” Livingstone said.
“ I am excited to see what the next generation of players will
be able to bring to the elite competition.”

Molan’s week just gets better as she has just been selected to
debut this Saturday VFLW game for the Western Bulldogs to
be played on MARS Stadium at 2pm.

GWV Rebels NAB league Player, Ella Wood will also debut
for the Bulldogs which is also a great result.

The GWV Rebels will battle with traditional rivals Geelong Falcons at GMHBA
Stadium in Round 14 of the NAB League.
The Falcons will be looking for redemption after the losing by 1 point in their last
outing against the GWV Rebels whilst the Rebels will be looking for a follow up win
after having a 2-week break.
These two teams are known for repeatedly making great games of footy.
The game will kick off at 1:30 pm on the Sunday at GMHBA Stadium.
Again, The GWV Rebels have made changes to the team. Experienced James
Cleaver and Matt Lloyd will be playing in the 3rd and final AFL Victoria Young
Guns game at Werribee on Saturday.
Great news with two U16 Players making their NAB League debut. Both Ben
Hobbs (Horsham Demons) and Josh Rentsch (Penshurst) performed well in the
NAB AFL National U16 Championships on the Gold Coast last week.
Ben Hobbs was named in the All Australian team which is a fine achievement.
The GWV Rebels will see Gage Wright (Horsham Saints) make his debut as the
23rd player after he has had an injury ridden first half of the season.
